After reminiscing about first meeting Ace, they arrive at a tree stump with three cups of sake on it where Ace appears. Before engaging him, Luffy demands his crew to stand down and fights him one-on-one and Luffy wins. Confused, Pato asks why Luffy fights so hard against someone so important, which Nami explains that it's because he's so important to Luffy. Sanji asks Pato how it feels to be replaced but he retaliates, saying he has no right to talk about Red like that, which Luffy agrees.
Upon leaving, Chopper invites Pato to follow. Ace then disappears in flames unlike in smoke like the other copies. At Transtown, Pato is still unsure of himself; Zoro tells him to stop thinking so much and trust his gut from time to time. The sound of firing artillery leads them to the next island, the frozen battlefield of Marineford , with Admiral Akainu waiting at the end. Remembering his role in the war 2 years ago, Luffy rushes ahead. He's intercepted by Jinbe , but is quickly defeated and rushes ahead.
Admiral Kizaru gets in their way and fights the crew, but halfway through the fight the crew tell Luffy to go ahead while the rest of them deal with Kizaru. He makes it past Akainu's Meteor Volcano and some Pacifistas and makes it to Akainu, who insults Luffy by implying his crew won't witness his death.
Meanwhile the Straw Hats appear to be getting grossly overpowered by Kizaru, and Akainu launches another Meteor Volcano in their direction to ensure their defeat. Enraged, Luffy dashes for Akainu but is frozen in place by Admiral Aokiji. Pato tries to free Luffy but is knocked away by Akainu. Right before Luffy is frozen entirely and impaled by an ice spear, the Ace copy appears suddenly and destroys the spear. He engages Aokiji alone and defeats him before freeing Luffy.
The Straw Hats also appear, miraculously overcoming their fight with Kizaru. Wounded, Aokiji uses his powers to create a battlefield for Akainu and the two brothers. Pato wonders how Ace is able to act on his own, which Robin believes is due to their bond they showed during their previous fight. Using their respective Fire Fists , the brothers emerge victorious. Ace finally disappears, this time leaving a leaf behind. Pato decides he'll try his hardest for Luffy like Ace did, which Luffy encourages.
When they return to the inn, Yadoya tells the group that large bats have been inexplicably appearing in the town at night; she will go to the plaza to investigate.
Pato believes Red is responsible, so he wants to use the opportunity to show his former boss his true feelings. His senses are founded when they see Red atop a bell tower above the plaza. He attacks the group with a multitude of copies of familiar faces, including the Straw Hats themselves. Undeterred, the real Straw Hats plow through the enemies to allow Pato to reach Red. Pato explains that he and his copy are not the same; it must be him who helps Red achieve his goals as an ally, not a tool.
Red states that being the Pirate King requires a certain amount of resolve. Surpassing the great names of the past requires abandoning various personality traits he considers weak, including his companionship with Pato.
Claiming to have abandoned his last weakness, his humanity, he kicks Pato away into a building. Angry, Luffy retaliates but Red dodges. He appears on the square, holding an unconscious Yadoya.
The crew can only watch in shock as Red bites her neck before dropping her unconscious, aged body on the ground. He stands over her, transformed into a younger, vampiric form. He explains that he stole her youth to regain his lost power. The crew try to fight him, but when he is about to lose he regains all his lost strength.
He explains that with the likes of Roger and Newgate around, he gave up his ambition and quietly served his sentence at Impel Down, but with them gone or succumbing to their age, he'll leave the same mark they did, using the immortality granted by his Devil Fruit to become the Pirate King. Luffy refutes this, claiming age doesn't define power, using Whitebeard as an example. When Red uses the now-retired Sengoku and Garp to prove his point, Luffy demands he shows him what he really means. Red complies, using his powers to severely age Luffy, whitening his hair and making his body frail and weak and proceeds to beat Luffy down.
Red claims his condition proves his point, but Luffy again talks about Whitebeard's undying will and ambition until his death, and also mentions Rayleigh.
